Exchange

Implantable Collamer Lenses, commonly called ICL, are synthetic contact lenses designed to be placed inside the eye to correct vision.

What is collamer?

Collamer is a highly biocompatible material that has been safely used for many years in the creation of synthetic lenses for cataract treatment. The EVO ICL lens represents a major advancement in vision correction technology and has demonstrated excellent long-term outcomes. These implantable lenses are designed to provide clear vision at all distances, both during the day and in low-light conditions at night. EVO ICL lenses also include built-in ultraviolet protection, making them especially well-suited for patients living in sunny regions such as Southern California.

Lens exchange and ICL

Over time, the eye’s natural lens can lose clarity and flexibility, eventually leading to cataracts. This occurs when proteins in the lens begin to thicken and cluster, leading to cloudy or blurred vision. Lens exchange surgery addresses this issue by replacing the natural lens with an advanced synthetic lens. This procedure is one of the most commonly performed eye surgeries worldwide.

Lens exchange differs from ICL implantation. With ICL, the natural lens remains in place, and a synthetic contact lens is added to improve vision. Both procedures can provide long-lasting visual clarity, depending on the patient’s condition and goals.

Keratoconus and ICL

Keratoconus is a condition that affects the cornea, causing it to thin and gradually protrude outward. Symptoms may include increasing light sensitivity, blurred vision, glare, or halos around lights. While keratoconus often begins during adolescence and progresses into the mid-thirties, progression patterns vary from person to person.

Clinical research has shown that a specialized Toric EVO ICL may be an effective option for select patients with keratoconus. In cases where keratoconus has required corneal transplantation, patients are often left with nearsightedness. ICL implantation can help restore clear vision across a range of distances and significantly improve overall visual quality.

Where is the ICL placed in the eye?

EVO ICL lenses are positioned behind the iris, which is the colored part of the eye. Each lens is custom-designed based on the patient’s prescription. Once implanted, the lens helps focus incoming light precisely onto the retina so visual signals are transmitted clearly to the brain through the optic nerve.
