Collagen Crosslinking

Corneal cross-linking is a state-of-the-art, FDA-approved, treatment for keratoconus, a condition in which a weakened cornea develops a cone-like bulge.

Collagen Crosslinking

Corneal crosslinking is an advanced FDA-approved treatment for keratoconus, a condition in which the cornea weakens and gradually develops a cone-shaped bulge that disrupts vision.

At Soroudi Advanced LASIK & Eye Centers, collagen crosslinking is offered as a minimally invasive outpatient procedure. The treatment uses a combination of specialized eye drops and controlled UVA light exposure to stimulate natural collagen strengthening within the cornea, helping improve its structural stability.

What can I expect from the procedure?

What can I expect from the procedure?

When performed by Dr. Ebbie Soroudi, the procedure begins with the application of riboflavin eye drops, also known as vitamin B2, directly onto the corneal surface. After adequate absorption, the eye is exposed to a calibrated ultraviolet light source. Together, the riboflavin and UVA light create a biochemical reaction that increases corneal stiffness and durability.
The procedure typically takes about fifteen minutes and is painless. Your eye is gently held open to prevent blinking, and patients generally find the experience very comfortable.

This treatment may also be recommended for other corneal ectasias, a medical term for conditions involving thinning of the transparent front portion of the eye.

Why is collagen crosslinking effective?

A helpful way to think about the process is controlled light exposure that strengthens tissue from within. Unlike older methods, this approach preserves the epithelium, the thin outer layer of the cornea, making the procedure less invasive and easier to recover from.

Stopping keratoconus progression

Corneal crosslinking is currently the only treatment shown to stop progressive keratoconus from worsening. By stabilizing the cornea early, many patients can avoid the need for corneal transplantation, a far more invasive surgical procedure.

Preparing for your treatment

On the day of your procedure, shower as usual and avoid wearing makeup. Dr. Soroudi recommends maintaining good eyelid hygiene with a warm compress soaked in baby shampoo or a clean, warm towel. Patients may also use his patented Eye Press device, available at CVS or online.
You may eat normally before your appointment, as fasting is not required. Please arrange transportation home after the procedure, either with another adult or a ride service such as Uber, Lyft, or a taxi.

Candidates

for collagen cross-linking

Dr. Soroudi typically recommends corneal crosslinking for patients aged thirty-five or younger, as corneal changes tend to stabilize naturally with age. Patients over 35 years old usually do not experience progressive weakening.
Some patients are told that collagen crosslinking improves vision, which is inaccurate. This procedure does not reverse existing corneal distortion. Its purpose is to prevent further progression. When vision correction is needed, Dr. Soroudi may combine collagen crosslinking with treatments such as Intacs, PRK, or other customized approaches to improve vision while maintaining corneal stability.

Recovery after collagen crosslinking

Most patients experience little to no discomfort after the procedure and can return to normal activities the next day. Dr. Soroudi performs collagen crosslinking with the advanced PXL Platinum 330 system, which features eye-tracking technology for enhanced precision and safety.
