In some cases, however, corneal disease or damage has progressed to a point where transplantation becomes the only viable solution. When the cornea is permanently scarred or structurally compromised, surgical replacement may be necessary to restore vision.
Soroudi Advanced LASIK and Eye Centers performs full-thickness corneal transplantation, also known as penetrating keratoplasty. This procedure involves removing the damaged portion of the cornea and replacing it with healthy donated human tissue. Because the cornea consists of five distinct layers, this technique replaces the entire corneal structure when all layers are affected.
Several conditions may make corneal transplantation the appropriate treatment option. Patients with significant vision loss due to corneal scarring, infection, disease, or structural deformity may benefit from this procedure. When the cornea becomes cloudy or its shape is severely distorted, replacing all its layers may be required to improve vision.
